"From now on" means 2030: social promises move to instalments

Minimum pension of 1,700 dirhams in 2027, direct aid of 600 dirhams. The big numbers come later.

The news

The PAM's election platform promised "from now on, no pension below 3,000 dirhams" and a floor of 1,000 dirhams for direct social aid.

The 2027 finance bill sets out this schedule: the minimum pension reaches 1,700 dirhams in 2027, then 3,000 dirhams by 2030. Direct aid rises by 100 dirhams from January 2027 to reach 600 dirhams, and is due to reach 1,000 dirhams gradually over five years.

Widows' survivor pensions rise to 100%, for about 431,000 beneficiaries, at an estimated annual cost of 7.33 billion dirhams.

The commentary

Satirical opinion from the editors

In balwara, "from now on" is not a time expression, it's a philosophical concept. It starts in 2027 and arrives in 2030, God willing.

To be fair, the number is going up, and the measure for widows is a real step. The only difference is that the promise was paid in cash and the delivery comes on credit.

Balwara index2/5

The rise is real, but "from now on" was a little optimistic.
