A promise that moved: income tax makes it into the budget
We count the balwaras, but also what moves forward. This time there's something good to say.
The news
The party leading the government promised to move from six income tax brackets to three, with 0% for gross salaries below 15,000 dirhams.
According to Fouzi Lekjaa's presentation, net salaries below 10,000 dirhams would be exempt, which could raise the share of exempt employees from 80% to 87%.
Le Matin adds that the reform will be phased in between 2027 and 2031: the annual exemption threshold would rise from 40,000 to 60,000 dirhams and the top rate would fall from 37% to 30%, at an estimated cost of 5.5 billion dirhams.
Light balwara: there's a number and a timeline.
The commentary
Satirical opinion from the editorsDon't panic, it's not a bug: this paragraph really is about a promise that moved. We'll see it on the payslip, because landlords don't accept rent in percentages.
And why "phased in"? Because in Morocco, even good news comes in brackets.
