30, then 35, then 40: the teaching exam age limit rises with each minister

The ceiling moves to 40, and for once the sums check out: 63 minus 40 is 23.

The news

Education Minister Mohamed Nabil Benabdallah announced on 3 November 2026, before the House of Representatives' Education, Culture and Communication Committee, that the age limit for teaching recruitment exams would rise from 35 to 40, while presenting his department's 2027 budget. The MPs present applauded.

The ceiling had been set at 30 in November 2021, when Chakib Benmoussa was minister, a decision that drew protests and union criticism. It was later raised to 35, when Mohamed Saad Berrada was minister.

Some had asked for 45. The minister based his choice on length of service: with retirement at 63, a person hired at 40 serves 23 years, against 18 years for someone hired at 45.

The commentary

Satirical opinion from the editors

30, then 35, and now 40: the minister changes and the ceiling gains five years, like a house where every new owner adds a floor. At this pace, five more ministers and we reach 65, meaning an exam held after retirement.

To be fair, the decision opens the door to more graduates, and the sums are right. 63 minus 40 is 23: a government number you can check without a committee, which alone deserves applause.

Balwara index1/5

A sensible decision and correct sums. The only balwara: the "maximum" won't stay put.
